Jaunty January has been a month of happiness all around.  It is the time when our children welcomed the new year with new promises and resolutions after the winter break.
January has been another month of learning and revising the concepts with the maximum participation in different activities like Intra and inter-school competitions, which not only honed their skills but also gave them a platform to showcase their talents.
The universal theme ‘ I am truthful ’ proved to be a big support for the young minds with the help of which the value of being truthful and honest could be inculcated well. The students happily narrated their personal experiences during the discussion time in the morning assembly sessions promising to be truthful and dedicated always. The dynamic Sun-citizens displayed their ardor and passion by celebrating Christmas on a virtual platform.
The students commenced their morning assemblies everyday with beautiful thoughts and enriching words. They enjoyed reading the NIE and sharing numerous facts and regular updates about various important events like Republic day and other competitions.

English

Students understood the importance of Advertisements and after learning about the various elements of Advertisement writing they wrote an advertisement using the aspects learnt in their notebooks with the help of the topic given in the workbook.

Unit 14 of Nelson English ‘Fire Beneath our Feet’ was read out loud and explained in the class. Students learnt about the volcanoes in detail and got to know of various new terms too. Based on the key points and notes they learnt how to write a summary. Summary writing was explained and discussed in the class. With the help of the workbook exercise, they wrote a summary of the chapter in their notebooks. Individual Project on Volcanoes was given to the children in which they choose to research, write benefits or amazing facts of a volcano.

Adverbs and their types was discussed in the class. A video was used to explain the concept better. Children attempted questions given in the textbook. Spelling book Unit 11 was discussed, explained and done in the class.

Mathematics

The young learners had a warm welcome post the Winter Break and were more than excited to share about their experiences during the holidays. They recapitulated the Place Value of Decimal Numbers and utilized their learning of the same to Compare & Order decimal numbers. Their understanding of the concept of Decimals got elevated to another level when they were introduced to Addition and Subtraction of Decimal Numbers. Students worked on multiple questions and real-life situations involving the Addition/Subtraction of Decimal Numbers and shared their inputs on the same.

Furthermore, the students were introduced to the concept of Area and Perimeter with the help of an activity where they covered one side of the cardboard completely with a coloured sheet and bordered the same with a coloured-tape/ribbon. The students discussed their experiences while doing the same and developed and understanding of Area and Perimeter and the difference between the two. They learnt to compute the Perimeter of regular and irregular closed figures and practiced certain questions in relation to the same.

Indian Dance
In their Indian Dance lessons, the students learnt:
NAVRAS-“Nine emotions of dance”
Dance form: Classical Kathak
YouTube link:
https://youtu.be/sSdMUaF3-18
https://youtu.be/BMwy2DmOrSU
यथोहस्ततथोदृष्टि (Yatho Hasta thatho Drishti)
Wherever your hands go, your eyes will follow,
यथोदृष्टितथोमनः (Yatho Drishti thatho Manah)
Wherever your eyes go, your mind will follow,
यथोमनःतथोभाव (Yatho Manah thatho Bhaava)
Wherever your mind goes, there will be expression of
inner feeling,
यथोभावतथोरस (Yatho Bhaava thatho Rasa)
Where there is expression shown, there will be sentiment evoked.

Nava means "Nine" and Rasa is often translated as "mood", "emotion", "expression" or "sentiment". The Navarasa, in the scriptures refer to the nine expressions that humans often show. These are love (shringaara), laughter (haasya), kind-heartedness or compassion (karuna), anger (roudra), courage (veera), fear (bhayaanaka), disgust (veebhatsya), wonder or surprise (adbhutha) and peace or tranquility (shaanta).
Drama & Theatre
Forms of Acting: Mono Acting and 5 Ws
Application of their learning:
  • Students performed a Mono Act related to the topic ‘Doctor and the Patient’, and understood how to perform two or three characters at the same time.
In Mono Acting, the actor performs many characters at one time himself to narrate the story or act; however, the time limit for a mono act is generally only 3 minutes.
  • Students were made aware of the 5 Ws of Drama – WHO, WHAT, WHY, WHERE and WHEN.
  • Students learnt the definition of above mentioned 5 Ws and applied their knowledge to write a story in class.
  • The 5 Ws: In investigative writing and research, the five Ws are used to gather information about a story or subject matter. In fact, most writers don't consider a story to be complete unless all five of the Ws have been addressed. The five Ws are who, what, when, where, and why. These question words allow students, writers, and researchers to understand the full scope of the topic being discussed and enable critical thinking. Many of these words can be used in interrogation to tease out the information.
GK Inter-House Competition
“Questions are the engines of intellect, the cerebral machines which convert energy to motion, and curiosity to controlled enquiry.”

They also learnt how to convert Improper fractions to Mixed fractions and vice-versa and practiced questions related to the same.

Introduction to the concept of Decimals was observed by students' input, videos, real life examples and related explanation. Young learners developed an understanding of Decimals by relating them to their prior knowledge and real life situations. Their understanding took another leap when they worked on converting Fractions with denominators 10 and 100 to Decimals.

Students worked on the Shin Edu Activity-page 6, honing their observation skills and imagination to identify and complete the given patterns with coloured cubes.

SCIENCE

The month started with the Science & Visual art integration activities where students observed the effect of force by making a working model of catapult and also learnt how energy can be produced with a paper pinwheel.

Further, the learners were assessed on their previous knowledge of different states of matter and their physical properties. Later they learnt about some more properties of states of matter. To enhance their understanding they were introduced to soluble and insoluble substances. Reinforcement of the concept was done by asking the students to pick various household items and categorize them as either soluble or insoluble. Understanding the process of Sedimentation, Decantation and Filtration was done through hands-on experimentation to understand how the substances separate from water.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Ch.12 Our Natural Resources

Concept Initiation was done by asking students to  identify the objects in their house which are made of natural resources. They made a long list of objects which are obtained from natural resources and are used by them every day. They were thrilled to understand the importance and usage of the natural resources in their lives. Further explanation was carried out using a flow chart and students were able to categorize the natural resources into exhaustible and non-exhaustible categories. Based on the discussion students were able to share examples under both the categories. Students also discussed the importance of conservation of resources and the emphasis given to SDG in our life. To strengthen the concept, worksheet 6 from the SDG book ‘Be The Change’ corresponding to SDG Goal 7-Clean and Affordable energy was done in the class.

Ch.15-Water Resources of India

AMAZING AUGUST

9/3/2021

Amazing August was filled with colours and festivities. The month proved to be a month of performance as the little scholars explored their skills in performing art - drama, music, and dance during the Subject Integration Week.

The month of August gave us a chance to reiterate the Universal Value – Being Respectful. Our lives have become so busy, that we have forgotten what Respect means. It may be respecting elders, respecting friends, respecting animals, respecting our resources, respecting our lives etc.

To reiterate the value and strengthen the importance of being respectful, the value was reinforced by way of class discussions, activities and worksheets.

The little scholars updated themselves with the happenings around the world by discussing the news from NIE starting from majestic Mondays morning to fabulous Fridays and inspired each other with quintessential quotes.

SPECIAL ASSEMBLY - JANMASHTMI

Natkat Nandalal, the Janmashtami special assembly was conducted by the talented students of Grade IV A. ‘Practice makes a man perfect’ was proved when the students practiced after school hours to put up an amazing assembly performance filled with music and dance numbers. They narrated the significance of observing this auspicious day in the Hindu calendar and shared snippets of information of Shree Krishna’s mischievous deeds.

SUBJECT INTEGRATION WEEK -
LANGUAGE & PERFORMING ARTS

"What we want is to see the child in pursuit of knowledge, and not knowledge in pursuit of the child". George Bernard Shaw
One way of discovering the curriculum with the children is integrating it across the board with other subjects and to do that we organized a Subject Integration Week in school during the week 9th August to 13th August. We integrated Language with Performing Arts through an array of activities. Integrated study brought together diverse disciplines in a comprehensive manner, enabling students to develop a meaningful understanding of the complex associations and influences within a topic. ‘Envirophilia-A Fancy Dress Party’ was organized for Grade I students. The little learners looked super excited as they came dressed on the theme of Plants and Aquatic Animals and spoke about the ‘Plant or Animal ‘that they played the role of, using their drama skills. They also carried props to convey their message. They explored the importance of SDG 14- ‘Life below Water’ and SDG 15- ‘Life on Land’ and made other students aware about them through their presentations. ‘The Edible Tales- Story on my Plate’ turned out to be a successful venture for Grade II students as they narrated their yummilicious stories with the help of creatively crafted fruit and vegetable salad using their vivid imagination and creative skills. This approach further developed the children’s ability to transfer their learning to other settings and correlate their sub conscious selves to conscious selves. The class was divided into Performers group and Audience group for these activities. The audience judged their peers’ performance on a Peer Assessment Rubric. This was only possible because they were able to more closely relate to real-world linguistic connections in an integrated curriculum approach. We were amazed by the meticulous efforts shown by the students. It was altogether an amazing week and we loved every bit of it.

INTER-HOUSE MENTAL MATH COMPETITION

Mathematics is a subject that the students should build upon and master throughout their educational experience, for it forms a strong foundation and aids in understanding how the world works and is a critical skill 21st century for learners, thereby allowing them to make important connections between these mathematical concepts that are being taught and the real world in which they live. Keeping this in mind the students from Grades 3 onwards participated in an Inter-House Mental Math competition held this month. The students from the 4 houses - Atlantic, Arctic, Pacific and Indian participated in a tough competition held on a virtual platform. There were 2 rounds - selection round done on MS Form application and the Final round (fastest finger first) conducted on Kahoot. Amidst nail biting finish, scores tied - the whole competition gave an insight to the students’ ability to calculate mentally faster.

MATHEMATICS

The month witnessed students exhilarated to practice for and participate in the Inter House Mental Math Competition. They worked on word problems involving the operations of addition/subtraction, relating both the operations to real life situations around them.

The learners recapitulated the terms and key words in relation to multiplication, thereafter learning to multiply by a 2-digit multiplier. They practiced related questions and word problems too.

Students enjoyed doing the Shin Edu Activity, using the coloured cubes, which thereby enhanced their spatial understanding, observation skill, imagination and concentration. Mr.Takehiro Nakamura & Mr.Takanobu Tanaka from the Shin Edu Power program were present to observe the students and were happy with students’ response in class.

SCIENCE

ANIMALS AND THEIR YOUNG ONES

In continuation to what the students learnt last month, the students continued to learn about Reproduction of animals. Further, they learnt about the two ways reproduction happens in animals – by laying eggs & giving birth to young ones. To understand this, they watched a video on the life cycle of butterfly and were amazed at the different stages they go through.

They were introduced to the next chapter, “How animals survive” where they learnt the differences between vertebrates & invertebrates. At present the students are learning to and categorize the animals into these two sub-divisions based on their characteristics. (they will continue to learn about this in the month of September)

SOCIAL STUDIES

The month commenced with an integration activity with the Subject integration week, integrating English where the students enjoyed making a Katputhli and presented a story using their hand made string puppets.

In continuation, students started to learn about The Southern Plateau. Students were shown pictures of different landforms that they had to identify and share which state they belonged to by way of pointing the location on the map.
The complete division of Southern plateau into Central Highland and Deccan Plateau was shown on the Map. The extent and location of Eastern and Western Ghats along the plateau was shown with the help of Google map.

Students understood more about the division, climate, vegetation and crops of these areas by watching a related video. To assess their understanding, they attempted an MS Form reflection task.

Ch.8-Life in Southern Plateau – (PBL)
The chapter was discussed using a Sway Presentation and as part of Project Based Learning, students were divided into 8 groups representing 8 states. They were given few guiding topics that they had to find about these states – neighbouring states, tourist places, occupation, dance, dress were some of the pointers that were researched on and shared with the class.
 Ch.9 Coastal Plains and Islands

The concept was introduced using the strategy ‘See, Think, Wonder’ where they were shown a related picture and were asked to identify the landform. Taking the discussion forward, they started their inquiry into the Eastern and Western coastal plain.

ICT

The journey of a computer has gone a long way since 1940 and has emerged as the necessity of our day-to-day life. It is so deeply rooted around us that its existence in the field of space research, medicines, etc. can be directly sensed with the evolution of Human kind.

Moving one step further, students learnt how to use the Application Software like Paint 3D, where they were amazed by the features by combining the real world with the virtual world. They learnt several tools of Paint 3D to create 2D/3D objects. This learning helped them to understand how Augmented Reality (AR) works on different platform as compared to Virtual Reality (VR).

ENGLISH

The learners continued to develop their understanding of Tenses and its usage. Their learning was recapitulated by way of playing concept related games, quizzes and activities. Integrating with SDG-14: Life below water, students applied their understanding of Tenses to use it correctly in the sentences related to water and shared it in class.

Students were learning about the art styles of Van Gogh in their art lessons. Integrating with Art, they started their inquiry into Van Gogh by finding out information about him by watching the Biography of Van Gogh. The elements of story - characters from his biography, the location of his birth, important dates and events, the highlights from his story were all made note of for better understanding.

As part of the Language and Performing art subject integration week, students made Katputhlis (string puppets) which is popular in the state of Rajasthan (integrating with Social Science, where the students are learning a chapter on Rajasthan). Our creative students made their own Katputhli and presented a story using their string puppets.

Students were assessed on their understanding of Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest through an MS Form as a reflection activity on completion of the topic. The knowledge acquisition remained consistent as the enthusiastic learners shared their prior knowledge of double consonants (tt, bb) and by sharing few words by spelling it and learnt to pronounce it correctly.

In literature, the little scholars were introduced to ‘excerpts’ of a book, as they read Stig of the dump and Wildfire from Nelson English book.
